Students help others for the holidays

Students wrap presents

Whether it's the elderly or the less fortunate, many TVHS students are thinking of others this holiday season.

Numerous freshmen donated food and other items that they then wrapped and gave to the residents of Van Rensselaer Manor nursing home in Troy last weekend.

Other students organized efforts outside of school.

Freshman Tim Williams is collecting food that he will donate to the Coxsackie Food Pantry.

"My dad has been in and out of surgery since the attacks on September 11 and my neighbors and family friends would help us whenever we needed it," said Williams, who is from Coxsackie. "So now I want to help the people who need a helping hand in a time."

Meanwhile sophomore Jenna Rodriguez and her family bought toys for needy families.

"For church there's a tree that had kids names on it and when you picked a name it gave you a gender and the age of them and what things they needed. We bought things for seven boys and girls," said Rodriguez, who attends TVHS from Schodack.

Principal Dan Liebert said he was proud of the student charitable activities.

"Giving back to your community is an important life skill that we stress at TVHS," said Liebert.
