Radio and biogenetics. The two are not typically associated with each other but TVHS students are combining the two to learn and show their knowledge of both.

TVHS sophomores are learning how to create podcasts about genetic research while also learning enough about genetics to prepare expert podcasts. Teacher Diana Weldon said teams of three or four students will create podcasts totaling 12 minutes each about emerging technologies, research and discoveries in the field of biotechnologies.

The best of the podcasts will then be aired on RPI's radio station, WRPI next month.

In preparing their projects, the students are visiting a number an area biotechnology firms.

On Monday, the students visited Kinentia, where researchers are studying different compounds that might eventually work to cure diseases such as psoriasis and a certain type of leukemia. Future trips are being planned, including one scheduled for February 10 at IPR.

"The students learning about emerging sciences and using emerging technologies to share their knowledge. It's a perfect combination," said Weldon.
