Three to represent TVHS at Poetry contest

01.05.10

A trio of juniors will represent TVHS in a regional poetry competition next month at the state museum.

Leilani Yasutake, from Germantown, Rose Biggerstaff, from Bethlehem, and Rachel Kerr, from East Greenbush, will recite up to three poems each from memory as part of the competition that draws students from throughout the Capital Region.

The students won the right to compete are winning a "Poetry Palooza"  in November in which the students were judged on their inflection, speaking ability, and memorization, among other characteristics.

The students are selecting their pieces this month and with the guidance of teacher Mary VanHoomissen will work on them in time for the February 25 competition at the New York State Museum. The event runs from 5 until 9 p.m.

Created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud is a national competition designed to encourage the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance.
