Students get their mission: Prepare 'us' for china visit

03.04.10

TVHS sophomores had their mission laid out for them on Wednesday: Prepare a group of education leaders for a trip to mainland China.

Schoharie School Superintendent Brian Sherman briefed the students in Diana Lim's Mandarin Chinese class on the trip and what the students' role would be in the mission.

"We need you to help us. We don't want to embarrass ourselves or our country," Sherman told the students.

With some of his fellow travelers looking on, notably Capital Region BOCES Assistant Superintendent Kathryn Gerbino, Duanesburg School Superintendent Christine Crowley and retired State Education Department official David Payton, Sherman asked the students to prepare information on a host of matters. Everything from the proper etiquette for greetings to language issues  that could be part of a guidebook the sophomores will prepare.

The educators also met with  the TVHS junior class, which will create a report that compares and contrasts the educational system of the two countries, TVHS Mandarin Chinese Teacher Diana Lim said.

Sherman, Gerbino, Crowley and  Payton are  part of a contingent of education leaders visiting China from April 6th through 16th. While there, they will visit schools in Beijing, Tianjin, and Changchun.

The group will return to TVHS on March 24, starting at 8:45 a.m. and again at noon to hear the information from the students.

On May 21 at 8 a.m., the educators will again return to TVHS to report to the students how their trip went.

TVHS is a two-year-old state-of-the-art public school in East Greenbush that serves students from 39 public schools in seven Capital Region counties – Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Columbia, Greene, Schoharie and Saratoga counties. The school combines the latest technology with project-based learning – a partnership that is designed to develop students with the skills employers are requiring in today's ever-changing workforce. It is funded through a partnership between Capital Region BOCES
and Questar III.
