Reading or watching movies can educate students somewhat about a culture.
Learning enough about that they can demonstrate traditional dances, cook a meal or explain the meaning behind an art form is whole different education.
That's exactly what students in all three Tech Valley High School grades recently did when conducting a Chinese New Year celebration.
The celebration, conducted March 5 at the school, "was amazing in the breadth of knowledge demonstrated by out students," said Principal Dan Liebert.
The event, which was open to the public, included a cooking demonstration/competition, demonstrations of traditional Chinese dances, calligraphy and other activities, as well as informational booths.
Nearly all TVHS students - which are drawn from several Capital Region and mid-Hudson Valley counties - took part in the event that drew well over 200 people to the schools.
Tech Valley High School students learn Mandarin Chinese as part of the 21st Century skills they are taught that are deemed necessary by many leading business and education officials.
