Vision: Tech Valley High School serves as a model in the region, the state and beyond of innovative public education that is based in strong partnerships and focuses on educating and inspiring students to embrace the increasingly important world of math and science.

Mission: Tech Valley High School provides a unique and innovative student-centered educational opportunity, engages students in current emerging technologies and supports the growth and economy of the region.

"From the standpoint of the New Technology Foundation, I think Tech Valley High School has the potential to be the best school we've been associated with. Nothing like this is going on in Silicon Valley, in Austin, Texas, in the Research Triangle – in the communities you are competing with. This is the only school that I'm dealing with that has this kind of community support."

director of strategic planning,

Commissioner Mills
visits Tech Valley High

New York State Education Commissioner Richard Mills arrived early - and left late when he made his first visit to Tech Valley High School recently. He was joined by Regent Joseph Bowman.

Their enthusiasm was evident as they met the school's 40 freshmen, parents, principal and teachers and saw the Tech Valley High model in action - from students working on exciting real-world projects to teachers explaining how they developed unique courses that meet NYS Learning Standards - and more.

Later Commissioner Mills noted:

THE MODEL: "This is a wonderful model of what a small high school could be."

THE ATMOSPHERE: "The atmosphere is rigorous and intellectual, but relaxed."

LEARNING: "Students appear to take responsibility for their own education."

PARENTS: "I have rarely heard parents of high school students who reported being as engaged with their children on academic matters as these parents seem to be."

PARTNERSHIPS: "The school has more than a hundred business partners, and all students have opportunities to see what the work world is becoming."

CONCLUSION: "This school is worth visiting."

During his visit to Tech Valley High, New York State Education Commissioner Richard Mills, left, said, "This is a wonderful model of what a small high school could be." Commissioner Mills and Dr. James N. Baldwin, district superintendent of Questar III, watch as Kyle White, a TVHS student from the Catskill Central School District, works on a project. The technology platform, a 1:1 student-to-computer ratio, is one of the characteristics that sets this public school apart.

From left, NYS Education Commissioner Richard Mills, NYS Regent Joseph Bowman and Dan Liebert, Tech Valley High School principal, watch as Tech Valley High School freshmen give a presentation about the technology they use daily and various projects they have completed since the school opened last September.

From left, David Miller, deputy commissioner for innovation, NYS Education Department; Dr. James N. Baldwin, district superintendent, Questar III; and NYS Education Commissioner Richard Mills watch as Tech Valley High School freshmen Cody Bagley from Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Central School District and James Hazzard from Sharron Springs Central School District work collaboratively on a project.

Meet Joey Chase, one of 40 freshmen at Tech Valley High School.

Age: 14

Home school district: Greenville Central School District

Why did you decide to attend TVHS? "I felt it would be a challenge and a new way of learning. I attended the Tech Valley Summer Camp and thought that was a cool way of learning. The main reason was for the challenge. Middle school was fairly easy for me & I wanted to challenge myself."

Joey Chase discusses his lab work with Dr. John Kelly III, senior vice president and director of IBM Research, IBM Corporation, during Dr. Kelly's recent visit to Tech Valley High.

What has been your favorite project at TVHS so far? "My favorite project was 'J-term.' I liked the freedom to choose my topic and final product. Plus I got to meet professionals in the field that interests me. I'm interested in mammalogy, and I was able to work with professionals at the United States Geological Survey to see real-world projects they were working on, such as the study of the 'tamarack' bird and its depleting numbers. It was very interesting to see how professional ornithologists actually work; I was very engaged in the project."

Fun fact about Joey: Joey is very interested in animals, animal science and zoology. He has a pet scorpion, a St. Bernard and a bearded dragon (a lizard that got its name because when it gets mad a flap that looks like a beard folds out of its neck).
