Rensselaer County Chamber
Members Experience Project-Based Learning Firsthand
Since the days when TVHS was just
a twinkle in the eye of Capital Region BOCES and Questar III, its organizers
had a fellow visionary and staunch supporter in Linda Hillman and the
Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Recently, the Rensselaer
chamber hosted a breakfast for its members to hear about the first year of
TVHS. And in true TVHS form, the business leaders learned by doing.

exercise to show how they are learning at the new public high school
focused on math, science and technology. |
Eleven TVHS freshmen
attended the Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce's June breakfast
to give a hands-on presentation that offered a glimpse into the future of
teaching and learning.
Sponsored by The DR
Group, the program recapped TVHS's first year. Principal Dan Liebert and
Director of Institutional Advancement Raona Roy hosted the event, in which
students led project-based learning exercises to show business leaders how
they learn every day.

citizens and workers in the 21st century as Principal Dan Liebert, second

And if John Olsen, shareholder of The DR Group, Albany, is any indication of
how the audience felt, then the event was off the charts. “Quite frankly, I
was blown away. I had the opportunity to see a formal presentation by the
students and the principal and to participate in a small workshop with one
student. All the students were amazing, and I was so impressed. I sat next to
a young lady (Micaela Quinn of Niskayuna) and had the opportunity to talk to her.
I am totally convinced that she will graduate from Tech Valley High and be
well equipped to
conquer the world."

The Rensselaer Chamber sees a
natural affinity between economic development and TVHS. Ms. Hillman, Chamber
president, noted: “We are particularly interested in this school because it is
positioned to play a key role in economic development by helping to stem the
region’s loss of academically talented youth by engaging them in all Tech
Valley has to offer; increasing the pipeline of students entering local
colleges; playing a key role in attracting and retaining new business to the
area; and developing a tech-savvy workforce of tomorrow."
